Troolin update - 1 Oct. 2012
Dear Friends and Family,
We drove from Ukarumpa back to the village about a week ago, and in the
process managed to get stuck in a sandy part of a deep river! Water
splashed up over the hood/bonnet and in through the front side windows,
and after reversing as far as possible, water was still three feet deep
and rushing past the truck and coming up through the floor holes! I felt
very foolish. I had driven where two men showed me to go, but really it
turns out that some kids bathing nearby knew the right path after all!
Of course when I got stuck the kids told me that many times! :) We all
sat in the truck as water came in through the cracks in the floor, and
realized that we were SAFE; it's just that we couldn't MOVE. Thankfully
a police pickup happened to be coming by about 20 minutes later and
pulled us out of the sandy bit so that we could turn and cross the river
the right way.
I found out again that it's so important to know the right way to go!
The Sam people, including those in Buan, need to know the right way to
go also. We have been praying for the church situation in Buan village,
where we live. We have seen the effects of not having a church here,
such as an increase in drunkenness (and some of those people making
threats against our house and our family), broken families, arguing and
fighting. Please pray about this situation!
Some encouragement from the work side of things:
- last week one of the translators was freed up from other community
responsibilities to advisor check Mark 13-15 with Dave, and we were able
to clean up Mark 13:1-13; he has resigned his role because he recognizes
that he needed to do so to help more with translation!
- last Saturday we had the very first Sam Library Day! :) We opened up
the office to everyone to come to read books in Sam! We now have 63 Sam
books in the library!
- one of the translators read the rough draft of the gospel of Mark, and
was so excited to tell us how much it spoke to him, and how he was
seeing many ways he could see how God wanted him to apply it to his
life! We only printed six copies of this first rough draft, but please
pray with us that we would be able to quickly do all the checks on Mark
so that we can get the final draft into the hands of ALL the Sam people!
Like when we were stuck in the river, we can see that the Sam people
have gotten stuck in a bad section of their spiritual journey, and the
river is flooded! Unlike with us, they are both NOT SAFE and NOT MOVING!
Please let's pray that God will work in their minds and hearts so that
He can pull them out and set them on the right path!
Grace and peace,
Dave and Sarah, from Buan village
